Welcome to Europe   -  Top

Most of you are probably already well aware that the IKC has signed up to FCI (basically, the European governing body of all Kennel Clubs). This will affect our dog shows in a number of different ways.

Firstly, our old Green Star system is going. Green stars will still be awarded as before, but the rules to make up a Champion shall differ (see below). Secondly, the seven IKC Groups shall be replaced by the ten FCI Groups.

And thirdly, the classes at shows shall be standardized along FCI lines. Under the old system, eligibility for some of the classes was dependent upon the dog having earned a certain number of wins. In the new FCI classification, all the classes are age dependent, with the exception of the Champion class.

Everyone is a bit hazy about the actual date-line of the changes, but I believe that all these new rules are coming into force in June 2007. Many shows are already phasing them in. It may be a little confusing at first, but no doubt, if we can get used to the Euro as quickly as we did, we can get used to this too.

The New Green Star System

To become a Champion, a dog now requires 7 green stars, to be gained under 7 different judges. One of the green stars must have been won after the dog is 15 months old.

Eligibility for a Green Star:
Grading cards will be allocated at each show. To challenge for a green star, a dog must be graded excellent, or in the case of a puppy, very promising. (Puppies can not receive an excellent grading.) Champions are eligible to challenge for the green star.

Group Win:
There is no longer any enhancement for a green star following a group win. In fact, all green stars are now of equal value, regardless of the number of dogs shown. (The old points system has gone.)

Annual Champion:
The title of Annual Champion will be awarded to the dog with the highest number of green stars won during the calendar year. In the event of a tie, the dog with the most Best of Breed wins will be awarded the title.

Conversion of Points from the Old System:
If your dog has already earned some green stars under the old system, they are to be converted to the new system as follows:

1-5 points = 1 Green Stars
6-11 points = 2 Green Stars
12-18 points = 3 Green Stars
19-24 points = 4 Green Stars
25-31 points = 5 Green Stars
32-38 points = 6 Green Stars

Dogs that have won 38 or more Green Stars under the old system must be awarded one more Green Star under the new system to become a Champion.
This new system came into force on 1st January 2007. It will be reviewed in 2009.
